Biography
Painter. Born in Seoul, South Korea. In 1922, entered Tokyo University of the Arts, via studying at Hongo Painting Institute and Kawabata Art School. While a student, was impressed by Yuzo Saeki’s works that he had painted in France. In 1927, went to France and visited Saeki’s studio in Paris. In 1928, he was strongly influenced by the sculptor Ossip Zadkine, whom he came to know. In 1931, he returned to Japan. He excelled in abstract painting composed of deep color fields, which gained high recognition both at home and abroad. In 1953, he established the Japan Abstract Art Club, along with such artists as Jiro Yoshihara and Shuzo Takiguchi.
