Biography

Painter. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1909, entered Tokyo University of the Arts. While a student, his work “Waseda” was selected for the 5th Bunten exhibition (first participation). In 1914, he moved to the US, and in 1919, he entered the National Academy of Design in NYC. In 1920, moved to France, and entered Académie Julian, but left the following year to study under Charles Guérin at Académie Colarossi. During his stay in France, he participated in exhibitions held by Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and Salon d'Automne. He returned to Japan in 1922. The following year, he held an exhibition composed of his works created in Europe. In addition, he was selected in consecutive years for the Teiten exhibition. He excelled in portrait painting, which expressed a typically Japanese sentiment, using authentic oil-painting techniques acquired in France. He continued to paint portraits until his early death, due to illness.
