Painter. Born in Kitakyushu City. Was motivated to become a painter due to his childhood leg injury. In 1928, entered Taiheiyo Gakai Institute, via studying at the Doshusha School of Western Painting. In 1932, “Landscape B” was selected to be shown in the 2nd Dokuritsu Exhibition (first participation). Thereafter, he participated in such shows as the Dokuritsu Exhibition and NOVA Art Association exhibition. He was active as a central figure among the young artists involved in the atelier village “Ikebukuro Montparnasse.” After WWII, the main venues for his exhibitions were the annually held Art Exhibition of Jiyu Bijutsu and the Shutai-bijutsu Exhibition. In addition, he worked on book-cover illustrations and illustrations for novels written by Shiro Ozaki and Ryotaro Shiba; children’s books; and tanka poetry and poetry books. Throughout his lifetime, he deepened his affection toward the small, the vulnerable, and things that would cease to exist; thus, he had a preference toward depicting images such as voiceless animals/plants, scrapped vessels, and landscapes of desolate harbors.
