Biography

Ukiyo-e artist/Japanese-style painter/lithographer/journalistic artist. Born in Kochi Prefecture. Studied Kano-school painting and Nanga painting. From 1894 to 1909, he was a member of the illustration staff for the monthly magazine “Fuzoku Gaho,” and actively worked as a journalistic artist. During this same period, as a Japanese-style painter, he also exhibited his paintings of beautiful women and birds-and-flowers paintings at the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. In addition, he published woodblock prints, such as a series of beauty prints that expressed the atmosphere of the Edo era. He was referred to as a leading artist of modern ukiyo-e prints.
