Biography
Ukiyo-e artist. Born in Osaka. Became a disciple of painter Kocho Ueda of the Shijo-ha school. He then studied under Sadamasu (Kunimasu) Utagawa. From 1834, he created such works as actor prints, warrior prints, and beauty prints, and in particular, became known for his landscapes. Many of his themes were regions in Japan, such as Tokaido, Omi and Osaka. He became known for such works as the series “Customs of Osaka: Frivolous Songs Matched with Beauties,” which combined Osaka’s landmarks with beautiful women. He was one of the leading ukiyo-e artists in the Kyoto-Osaka area.
