Biography
Artist. Born in Aomori Prefecture. In the 1930s, having been influenced by Dadaism and Russian Constructivism, he took a strong interest in the trends in avant-garde art. In 1933, he joined the Avant-garde Western Art Institute. In the 1940s, his creative activity was suspended due to WWII and illness. He resumed his activity when the war ended. He originated a unique semi-3D, constructive type of work, which was neither painting nor sculpture. In 1958, with the recommendation of the art critic Shuzo Takiguchi, his first solo exhibition was held. In 1960, he received First Prize in the 4th Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan, while also gaining high recognition in many international exhibitions, including Honorable Mention in the 3rd Guggenheim International Award Exhibition (1960).
