Biography

Painter. Born in Tokyo. In 1933, studied at Kawabata Art School. Participated in the art association Toko-kai. In 1944, was drafted into military and sent to the Burma front. When Japan was defeated in 1945, he became a captive, during which time he sketched the daily life of a war prisoner. In 1946, he was released and resumed painting in Kitakyushu City. In 1972, he revisited Burma and found a new motif in the foreign land. While in Paris for a year in 1975, he energetically painted new works. During that year, he visited the Sahara Desert in Tunisia and was impressed and awe struck by Mother Nature. He ventured into these new experiences at the age of seventy, based on his lifelong determination to always be just one of many painters. This led to a great transformation of his painting style, from Mannerism to pure abstract art.
