Biography

Painter. Born in Fukuoka City. In 1913, moved to Tokyo and studied at Hongo Yoga Kenkyujo (Hongo Western-style Painting Institute) for two months but left to teach himself painting. In 1921, was selected for the 8th Nika Art Exhibition (first participation). In 1923, joined the Encho-kai association. In 1925, went to France. During his stay until 1928, he traveled around Europe, including Spain and Italy. After he returned to Japan, he showed twenty-two works he created in France in the Special Exhibition section of the 15th Nika Art Exhibition. In 1930, he became a member of Nika Association, but withdrew that same year and participated in the founding of Dokuritsu Art Association. He focused on creating “Japanese oil painting” that harmonized with the Japanese temperament and cultural climate. He established his own unique expressions via adopting the traditional arts in Japan, such as screen painting of the Momoyama era, Rimpa painting, and Nanga painting.
