Biography
Ukiyo-e artist/Japanese-style painter. The eldest daughter of Kyosai Kawanabe. Inheriting her father’s painting style, she depicted bijin-ga (beautiful women) and noh-ga (Noh plays). From 1883 onward, she continued to show her works in exhibitions, and gained recognition for the coloring in her works. In the latter half of the 1890s, she began to teach at the Joshibi University of Art and Design. Up until the end of Meiji era (1868-1912), she was active as a painter in a wide range of mediums, such as multicolored prints, and published illustrated books. Few of her works survive today.
