Biography
Painter. Born in Tokyo. From 1908, studied under Seiki Kuroda. In 1910, applied for the first time and was selected to the Bunten exhibition. From 1911, became impressed by Post-Impressionists such as Van Gogh. In 1912, participated in the founding of the Fusain Society. From around 1914, became devoted to Northern Renaissance painting. In 1915, founded the painting group Sodosha, and began to seek his own unique style of Realism. In 1917, moved to Kanagawa Prefecture, and began to create a series of portraits of his daughter Reiko, which were eventually recognized as masterpieces. In 1923, moved to Kyoto for a brief period. On his way back from his solo exhibition held in Manchuria, China, he died of illness at the age of 38.
