Biography

Painter. Born in Hyogo Prefecture. In 1952, founded Zero-kai (Zero Society) along with artists who had participated in the Shinseisaku Art Exhibition, such as Kazuo Shiraga and Saburo Murakami. In 1955, joined the Gutai Art Association. In 1957, gained attention for his experimental Automatic works that utilized a painting machine. His intention was to consistently pursue the beauty of material, without any intervention from the artist’s aim or emotion in the work. In 1965, after withdrawing from Gutai along with Atsuko Tanaka, he withheld from exhibiting works in public for a long period. At the end of the 1980s, he fully resumed his creative activity. He exhibited works such as a series that visualized music, and works that depicted the interrelations between galaxies, planets, and the Earth, in the forms of figures and numbers.
