Biography
Painter. Born in Oita Prefecture. In 1907, entered Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1909, was selected for the 3rd Bunten exhibition (first participation). During the Taisho Period (1912–26), studied “nanga” painting, and then began experimenting with Eastern-style expressions. In 1919, participated in the founding of the art association Shinkoyogakai. In that same year, participated in the 1st Teiten exhibition (was exempt from the selection process). In 1927, created illustrations for a serial novel, “Kamigami no Tawamure,” by Haruo Sato, published in the Hochi Shimbun newspaper. In that same year, completed a mural for the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery. In 1928, was appointed as a jury of the 9th Teiten. From that year on, he was in and out of the hospital for alcoholism, and died in 1934.
