Biography

Painter. Born in Oita Prefecture. From 1929, studied the techniques of Japanese lacquer art and lacquer-ware decoration. Was engaged in lacquer art design, while also teaching himself woodblock printmaking. In 1935, began to participate in Kokuten exhibitions. In 1939, shifted to oil painting, while also receiving the support of art collector Shigetaro Fukushima. In 1944, became a member of the Kokugakai association. In 1964, visited Iran and Egypt for his studies. Was impressed by the forms of ancient Persian and Egyptian reliefs. Thus, he came to seek his own original abstract expression, utilizing vivid primary colors and a texture with a unique luster created by kneading crystal and calcite powder into pigments. In 1986, he completed the wall painting “Hibiki (Resonance)” at Suntory Hall.
