Biography

Ukiyo-e artist. Disciple of ukiyo-e artist Shigemasa Kitao. From 1780, he began to create many illustrations for books such as kibyoshi(picture book for adults), share-bon (witty books) and kokkei-bon (humorous books), as well as for geographic illustrations. He produced a total of over 160 of such illustrations for kibyoshi book. Aside from a few bijin-ga prints, his multicolored prints were largely warrior prints, birds-eye-view landscapes, and one-point-perspective prints. He then became a disciple of Korenobu Kano (Yosen-in), who served as an official painter of the Tokugawa shogunate. Thereafter, he focused on creating nikuhitsu-ga paintings. In addition, he published many model books for artists. Aside from paintings, he also wrote humorous tanka poems and light fiction.
