Biography

Painter. Born in Oita Prefecture. In 1927, studied at Kawabata Art School. In 1929, entered the institute Shajitsu Kenkyusho, run by painter Kanji Maeta. In 1930, was selected for the 8th Shunyo Art Exhibition (first participation). In 1945, suffered the bombing of Tokyo, which burned almost all of his prewar works, aside from a few he had in his hometown. In 1947, joined the art association Jiyu Bijutsuka Kyokai. In 1954, opened Kitakyushu Jiyu Studio and served as a lecturer. In 1957, was awarded the Honorable Mention Prize in the 4th International Art Exhibition, Japan (Tokyo Biennale). In 1968, received Mr. K’s Award (The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura) in the 8th Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan. Though he emerged as a Surrealist painter in the prewar period, after the war, he expressively depicted the oppressed human figures on the picture plane with a sense of tranquility.
