Biography

Spanish painter/print artist. Born in Barcelona. Studied law at the University of Barcelona, but wanting to become a painter, he began teaching himself painting. From the mid-1940s, he worked on collage works, applied with thick layers of materials such as earth. His first solo exhibition was held in 1950. In that same year, he went to Paris with a scholarship from the French government. He gained international attention as a leading figure of Informalism, through receiving such recognitions as the Sao Paulo Biennale Prize (1953) and the UNESCO Prize at the Venice Biennale (1958). From the 1970s onward, he was influenced by Pop Art, while also exhibiting works that incorporated more substantial objects.
