STELLA, Frank

Biography

American painter/sculptor. Born in Massachusetts. After studying history at Princeton University, he moved to NYC. From 1958, he produced the “Black Painting” series that filled the entire plane with parallel black stripes. In 1960, he began to use shaped canvas that unified bent stripes with the form of the entire canvas. This style gradually incorporated colors and curved lines. In the 1970s, he broadened the scope of his painting styles by making a complete shift from the striped pattern to creating a relief-type work composed of metal plates in intricate forms, colored with vigorous brushstrokes. In 1982 and 1991, his solo exhibitions were held at our museum. In 1993, he produced “YAWATA Works” in an open-studio style at a factory in the city of Kitakyushu.
