Biography
American sculptor. Born in San Francisco. Began his career creating paintings, but while he was in Paris and Florence, he made the full shift to becoming a sculptor. In 1966, his first solo exhibition was held in Rome. In that same year, he returned to the US and moved to NYC, where he produced 3D works using materials such as rubber belts, neon tubes and molten lead. From 1970 onward, he created large-scale sculptures that utilized metallic plates of such materials as steel, while also working on his “Installation Drawings” that used only black. In 1981, his large-scale sculpture “Tilted Arc,” which was installed in NYC’s Federal Plaza, sparked an argument on works in public spaces and on-site specificity, resulting in the removal of the sculpture in 1989.
