Biography
American painter/print artist. Born in North Dakota. Studied painting at the Minneapolis School of Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the University of Minnesota. In 1955, moved to NYC on a scholarship to study at the Art Students League of New York. From 1957-60, he earned his living as a billboard painter. He then created a large-scale painting that applied the techniques he had acquired during that period. The work “F-111,” created from 1964-65, received international acclaim. Thereafter, he came to be known as one of the leading Pop artists, along with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Aside from paintings, he produced large-scale prints and many collages. In 1972, his first retrospective was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
