Biography

Spanish/French painter. Born in Málaga, Spain. After learning the rudiments of painting from his father, who was an art teacher, he studied at schools such as Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. In 1901, his first solo exhibition was held at art dealer Ambroise Vollard’s gallery in Paris. In 1904, he set up a studio at the apartment “Bateau-Lavoir” (Washhouse Boat) in Montmartre, and began to be fully engaged in his creative activity in Paris. Via his Blue and Rose Periods, he completed his masterwork “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon” in 1907, which marked the beginning of twentieth-century art. He and Georges Braque founded the Cubist movement. Thereafter, he continuously changed his painting styles, including Neoclassicism and Surrealism. He created an enormous number of works in a broad range of artistic fields, such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and stage design.
