MOORE, Henry

1898-1986

Biography

British sculptor. Born in Castleford. Studied at the Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. In 1928, his first solo exhibition was held in London. He drew inspiration from forms created by nature, such as bones, stones and rocks. Throughout his lifetime, he continued to seek human forms and human vitality, based on such themes as “reclining figure” and “mother and child.” He greatly influenced contemporary sculpture by introducing a new spatial element to sculpture seen as a solid mass, through creating a hole in a monumental mass. In addition, he produced prints while also publishing a great number of albums of prints.
