Biography

Spanish painter. Born in Barcelona. In 1920, visited Paris where he encountered Surrealist poets such as Andre Breton and Paul Éluard. In time, he came to depict poetic oil paintings studded with fantastical, symbolic motifs over the entire picture plane. His first book illustrated with pochoirs, “Once There Was a Little Magpie,” was published in 1928. In 1930, he began to work with lithographs, while also continuing to acquire various other print techniques, with over 1,000 printworks existing today. In 1948, residing fully in Paris, he created lithographs at l'atelier Mourlot. From around that time, he began to work on illustrations for many poets and artists. In 1970, he produced a large-scale ceramic-tile mural “Innocent Laughter” for the Expo ’70 in Osaka.
