Biography

American conceptual artist. Born in Ohio. While a student at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, he embarked on works that adopted words. He conceptualized the relationship between words and objects, and in 1965, exhibited “One and Three Chairs,” consisting of an actual chair, a photo of that chair, and the dictionary definition of the word “chair” enlarged on a panel. In 1969, he published his essay “Art after Philosophy,” which attracted international attention, along with his works that utilized photostats of dictionary definitions. From the 1970s onward, he has continued to actively exhibit his works, including in Japan in 1999-2000, when his large-scale retrospectives were held at Chiba City Museum of Art and The Tokushima Modern Art Museum.
