DINE, Jim

1935-

Biography

American painter/print artist/sculptor. Born in Ohio. In 1958, moved to NYC. Aside from creating paintings and sculptures, he began to experiment with Happenings (performance art staged on streets) early in their existence, along with artists he met such as Claes Oldenburg. In 1960, he held his first solo exhibition in NYC. Because he has repeatedly depicted familiar items, such as carpenter’s tools and bathrobes, he is often referred to as a Pop artist, though he has denied this. Despite depicting familiar items, his works never lose their individuality. Rather, his theme is to strictly pursue humanity through metaphorically expressing the humans that use such familiar items and their bodies.
