Biography

French painter. Born in Aix-en-Provence. In 1861, moved to Paris, aspiring to be a painter. Entered the art school Académie Suisse, where he met and was inspired by Camille Pissarro, while also socializing with other Impressionist painters. In his works, he aimed to actualize the sense of existence of the subjects and an orderly spatial composition, while also inheriting the precepts of Impressionism. He greatly affected the art world of that period, such as influencing the Cubism of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He depicted many paintings with the themes of bathing scenes and Mont Sainte-Victoire, which stood in his hometown.
