Biography

French sculptor. Born in Montauban. In 1884, received second place in the competition to enter the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1893, began to work for Rodin as an assistant marble carver and befriended him. He became independent in 1908. From 1909, he began to teach sculpture at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére, where he taught the basics to artists such as Giacometti. For the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, completed in 1913, he produced reliefs for the façade and frescoes for the interior atrium. Aside from creating many monuments, he also produced sculptural portraits of prominent figures such as Beethoven.
