Biography
Textile artist. Born in Kitakyushu City. Entered Waseda University, but left in 1974, wanting to become a textile artist. Studied at a textile institute in Kitakyushu, and then learning tsumugi-ori weaving in such places as Kumejima, Okinawa Prefecture and Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. In 1984, she succeeded in reviving Kokura-ori weaving. The following year, she applied to the Japan Kogei Association Exhibition for the first time and was selected to participate. Her work gained attention in that exhibition. In 1994, she revived the weaving of “Kokura-chijimi,” a thin fabric that uses hard-twist yarn, such as silk and cotton. In 1995, she established Yuh Textile Studio. In 1996, she was selected as a trainee to become a successor to “Ra” weaving, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property, created by a Living National Treasure, the late Takeshi Kitamura. In 2014, Tsuiki’s solo exhibition was held at our museum. Her works are in the collections of many art museums inside and outside Japan. Aside from textile work, her wide range of activities include design, printmaking, and art direction.
