Biography
British sculptor. Born in Prestatyn, North Wales. From 1964, studied under sculptor Phillip King at St. Martin’s School of Art. In 1966, held his first solo exhibition in London. Gained international recognition for his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1982, and for his solo exhibition held at the Pompidou Centre the following year. He was initially known for works in which he filled bags with sand or plaster, but from the early 1980s, he shifted to creating figurative representations of animals. In 1979, he produced the first “Leaping Hare” sculpture. A hare was an important motif to Flanagan, as he also created a great number of hare sculptures in various postures.
