Biography

Painter. Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. In 1924, moved to Tokyo to study under Kyuho Noda. Participated in the innovative Japanese painting groups Shin Nihonga Kenkyu-kai and Shin Bijutsu-jin Kyokai, and soon emerged as a rising artist. In 1936, was awarded a bronze medal in the Art Competition of the Berlin Olympics. In 1944, suspended his painting activity due to being drafted into military. Was discharged in 1946, but due to the death of his younger brother who used to be his supporter, he moved to Kitakyushu City to support his brother’s family. Thus, he withdrew from the center of the painting world. From 1961, he actively held solo exhibitions in Tokyo, but passed away from a sudden illness. Using life forms as motifs, he depicted a sense of vitality and primordial force within the flat and decorative elements of his paintings.
