Biography

Contemporary artist/sculptor. Born in Kobe City. Began his activity based in the Kansai region. Went to Germany in 1975. In 1986, opened his studios in Dusseldorf and Japan, and has continued to produce and exhibit his works in both countries. In 1988, participated in the Venice Biennale. His works are based on the theme of “the visible” and “the invisible,” as relates to structure, existence and relationships. They are characterized by expressions aimed at visualizing such phenomena as gravitational force and tension, through using materials such as wood, stone, rope, fabric and metal. While his concept has been consistent, he has worked in a broad range of artistic fields, including sculpture, installation, photography, video and performance art. In 2003, his solo exhibition was held at our museum. Up to the present day, he has continued to exhibit his works both inside and outside Japan.
