Biography
French painter. Born in Limoges. At the age of thirteen, he worked as a porcelain painter, and then studied drawing and decorative art from sculptor Louis-Denis Caillouette. In 1861, he entered Charles Gleyre’s art studio, where he associated with painters such as Alfred Sisley and Monet. He was influenced by his encounter with the painter Narcisse Virgilio Diaz of the Barbizon school. In 1862, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After he participated in Impressionist exhibitions (1874–77), he became active as a portrait painter. In 1892, he held a large-scale solo exhibition at Galeria Durand-Ruel in Paris. In the first half of the 1880s, he pursued Ingres’ style of Classicism, but by around 1890, he painted many figures of women and nude women using soft brush strokes and a rich palette of colors.
