GAUGUIN, Paul

1848-1903

Biography

French painter. Born in Paris. Began painting as a hobby, but an encounter with Camille Pissarro encouraged him to become devoted to painting. From 1879, he participated in Impressionist exhibitions. He worked as a stockbroker, but in 1883, he quit his job and became fully engaged in painting. He established a unique painting style in which he depicted the images and feelings in his mind through creating a harmony between simplified colors and forms. In the latter half of his life, he moved from France to Tahiti, and painted motifs such as Tahitian women and daily life with vibrant colors.
