Biography

Photographer. Born in Kitakyushu City. In 1967, entered Tokyo University of the Arts. Traveled to India during his time as a student. In 1970, published a series of photo-essays in the weekly magazine “Asahigraph.” In 1972, published his first book of photographs, “Indo Horo/Wondering in India.” Thereafter, traveled to various parts of Asia and published the photo-essay books “Tibit Horo/Wandering in Tibert” and “Shoyo Yuki.” In 1981, “Tokyo Hyoryu/Tokyo Drifting,” based on the theme of Japanese society, became a bestseller, and “Mémento-Mori,” published in that same year, became a trend-setting book. He currently works in a wide range of creative activities, including photography, writing, painting and calligraphy. In 2022, his large-scale solo exhibition was held at our museum.
