Biography

Sculptor. Born in Osaka City. In 1950, completed the Sculpture course at Osaka Municipal Institute of Art. In 1965, received the Mr. K Prize in the UBE Biennale. In 1969, held his solo exhibition for the first time at Shinanobashi Gallery. In 1987, exhibited “Iron Tomb” at International Iron Sculpture Symposium YAHATA ’87. In 1990, participated in the 44th Venice Biennale, together with artist Toshikatsu Endo. From the 1970s, using iron as his primary material, he incorporated phenomena such as gravity, heat, light and sound into the forms of his works. From the mid-1980s, he created works and installations using such materials as salt, sulfur and an oxygen tank, based on the theme of the thermal phenomena of materials. These works strongly focused on the fundamental relationship between life and materials. He was known for creating the earliest example of a sculpture that adopted the thermal cutting method.
