Biography
Painter. Born in Hyogo Prefecture. In 1896, moved with his family to Fukuoka City. In 1899, moved to Tokyo and studied at Hakuba-kai Institute of Western-style Painting. In 1901, entered Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1907 and 1908, won the highest award at the 1st and the 2nd Bunten exhibitions. In 1909, went to Europe to study. In 1915, returned to Japan, via visiting such countries as Singapore and India. In 1932, became a professor of Tokyo University of the Arts, and in 1950, became a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 1958, was designated as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government. Was active as a prominent figure of the Japanese painting world, serving consecutively as a juror of Bunten exhibitions. In addition, he was also active in a wide variety of fields, including Japanese-style painting, printmaking, color study, textiles, stage design, manga, and design.
