Biography

Painter. Born in Iwate Prefecture. In 1903, moved to Tokyo. While a student at Waseda Junior High School, studied at the 2nd Hakuba-kai Institute of Western-style painting. In 1907, entered Tokyo University of the Arts. Was influenced by Van Gogh and Matisse. In 1912, participated in Fusian Society’s exhibition. In 1914, returned to Iwate, then came back to Tokyo in 1917. In that same year, he exhibited a work in the Nika Art Exhibition, which indicated the earliest example of the influence of Cubism in Japan. After moving to Kanagawa Prefecture due to tuberculosis, actively produced Japanese-style paintings, before later pursuing his studies on Nanga painting.
