Biography | Fabric collage artist. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Otsuma Women’s University in 1945. The following year, joined the editorial staff of the monthly girl’s magazine “Himawari” at a time when illustrator Junichi Nakahara was launching its first issue. In 1947, studied drawing under painter Genichiro Inokuma. In 1950, became independent and worked on illustrations for magazines and picture books, while also creating handcraft art. From 1952 to 1989, produced the cover illustrations for the monthly picture book “Yoiko-no-Kuni” (Gakken Co., Ltd). In 1964, moved to Italy. With the picture book “Pinocchio” being her first in 1971, she published many books using fabric collage art. In 1975, she began to create paintings with fabric collage art. She and her husband, artist Shu Takahashi, returned to Japan in 2004. In 2006, they established the Shuo Foundation Award for Art Studies Abroad, through which they continued to support young artists. |
