| Biography | Artist. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1963, was invited as a research fellow by the Italian government and moved to Europe. Was based in Rome until he returned to Japan in 2004, during which time he held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in many countries. After moving to Europe, his painting style, which was rich in texture with thick contour lines, transformed to being characterized by distinct colors and forms, adopting the motifs of life and death, and eroticism. He also produced many prints and monuments, while also serving as an art director on the film “Dedicated to the Aegean Sea,” originally written by artist Masuo Ikeda. In 1981, our museum was the first to hold his solo exhibition at a public art museum. In 2020, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government. In 2021, he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Star of Italy by the Italian government. |
