| Biography | Italian painter. Born in Naples. Studied architecture at the University of Rome. In 1971, held his first solo exhibition in Rome. In the 1970s, traveled to India and Afghanistan, out of his interest in folklore and Eastern mysticism. Through freely interweaving motifs deriving from all countries, he has originated fantastic imagery that does not belong to any specific cultural region. He has also actively collaborated with other artists, such as his productions with Warhol and Basquiat. Clemente is also known as a painter of the Italian Transavanguardia movement, and is referred to as one of the “three Cs,” the other two being Enzo Cucchi and Sandro Chia. He has held large-scale retrospectives at museums that include the Guggenheim and the Uffizi Gallery. |
