Biography | Sculptor. Born in Okayama City. Studied Art History as a graduate student at Waseda University. Began producing steel sculptures while still a student. He embarked on the “Who’s Who” series in 1962, and since 1963, created objects by inverting the inside and the outside of such as a light bulb or doll, based on his concept of “Gyobutsu-Hoi(Object Supplements).” In 1966, his first solo exhibition was held at Tokyo Gallery. In 1967, he founded “OKAZAKI GIVEAWAYS,” a studio for producing multiple objects. In 1969, he opened “Supplement Gallery” in Ginza, and in 1978, opened “Okazaki Kazuo’s Supplement Gallery” in Shinjuku. From the 1970s, he started to work on the “HISASHI” series. In 1994, “HISASHI—The Which Supplements” was permanently installed in the Room “Moon” of Nagi Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2016, his large-scale solo exhibition was held at our museum. |
