Biography | Ukiyo-e artist. Became a disciple of Toyokuni Utagawa, but for a period he faced adversity. From around 1827, his popularity suddenly surged when he published the warrior-print series “One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Popular Suikoden All Told.” This encouraged him to publish a great number of other warrior prints. Aside from creating warrior prints, in which each work dynamically developed on a set of three sheets, he also opened new ground in such works as humorous prints and caricatures, which were filled with a sense of humor and originality. In addition, he also produced a broad range of mediums, such as landscape prints, beauty prints and actor prints. He is known as an extreme cat lover, and created many humorous prints in which cats were personified as humans and other forms, while also producing many works based on the theme of cats. |
