| Biography | Ukiyo-e artist. Disciple of Kuniyoshi Utagawa. His works found were created from the Kaei era (1848-54) to around 1870. He produced battle prints, warrior prints, birds-and-flowers prints, and illustrations for popular fictions. When the Port of Yokohama opened to international trade, he took a strong interest in foreign manners and customs, and published Yokohama prints one after another. He became a leading artist in the genre of Yokohama prints, with a total of 110 existing works. This number was the second most after Yoshitora Utagawa, who also belonged to the Utagawa school. |
