| Biography | American painter/sculptor. Born in Georgia. Moved to NYC in 1949 but was drafted into the army. Was later stationed in Sendai (Japan) before he was discharged. Returned to NYC and began painting. In 1954, he met artist Robert Rauschenberg. In that same year, he created the first work of the “Flag” series, and then embarked on his other notable painting series one after another, such as “Target” and “Number.” In 1958, his first solo exhibition, held at the Leo Castelli Gallery, was a success. Thereafter, he was referred to as a Neo-Dadaist, along with such artists as Rauschenberg, while also being regarded as a leading American artist after Abstract Expressionism. In addition, he created multiples using motifs of everyday items. Since 1960, he has also energetically produced prints and reliefs. In 1988, he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. |
