Biography | Painter. Born in Nagasaki City. Gained national attention as a core member of the avant-garde art collective “Kyushu-ha,” founded in Fukuoka City in 1957. In the 1960s, was active as a flag-bearer of Han-geijutsu (anti-art movement). After suspending his artistic activity for many years, in 1983, he began to exhibit many series of large-scale paintings, starting with “Ptolemaic Theory.” He then went on to other series, including “Moonlight” and “Moon Palace,” which brought him back to the spotlight. He was also involved in a wide range of other activities, such as publishing many critical essays on art. In these essays, he was quick to reference such works as war paintings and the coal-mine paintings of Sakubei Yamamoto. |
