Biography | Light-fiction writer/ukiyo-e artist. Became a disciple of Utamaro Kitagawa. His creative activity was between the Bunka era (1804–18) and early Tenpo era (1831–45). He began by studying light fiction under Harumachi Koikawa, who established a genre referred to as “kibyoshi” (picture book for adults), and wrote books in this genre. After the death of Harumachi, he became Harumachi II. He learned drawing techniques from Utamaro I, and created bijin-ga (beauty prints). He adopted the name Utamaro II after the death of Utamaro. |
