Biography | Ukiyo-e artist. Studied under Hakkeisai Kano, then became a disciple of Eizan Kikukawa. Began his career by creating works in the Eizan-style of lyrical bijin-ga (beauty prints), but in time, he established his own style inspired by the enchanting beauty prints of Toyokuni Utagawa and Kunisada Utagawa. He gained popularity for originating his own style of beauty prints that conveyed bewitching and decadent feelings. This style was characterized by a beautiful woman with upturned, slanted eyes and a protruding lower lip. He also worked with a variety of other mediums, including landscapes, bird-and-flower prints and warrior prints. In addition, from around the end of the Tempo era (1830–44), he focused on such writings as light literature, and commentaries of ukiyo-e artists. |
