Biography	Ukiyo-e artist. Disciple of Hiroshige Utagawa. Married Hiroshige’s eldest daughter and was adopted into her family. He used the name Hiroshige II, but was actually Hiroshige III. From the Keio era (1865-68) to the early Meiji era (1868-1912), he created many Yokohama prints, which depicted new manners and customs in the port city of Yokohama that had opened, and kaika-e (prints on Japan’s Westernization), the theme of which was Westernization in Japan. The latter vividly described the changing Tokyo, through journalistically capturing new civilization/culture from the West, such as people dressed in Western clothing, Western-style architecture, and a steam locomotive.
