Biography	Ukiyo-e artist/Japanese-style painter. Disciple of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka. After Yoshitoshi’s death, he led the Tsukioka school. He published a great number of multicolored bijin-ga (beauty prints), while also breaking new ground in historical paintings on manners and customs. Around 1887–97, he gained popularity as an illustration artist. The Tsukioka school produced Japanese-style artists Kiyokata Kaburaki and Terukata Ikeda. Toshikata helped bridge the transition from ukiyo-e to modern Japanese-style painting. It should be noted that his endeavor to make a new development in ukiyo-e boosted the social standing of artisans so that they were recognized as artists.
