Biography | Painter. Born in Fukuoka City. In 1923, entered Waseda University. In September that same year, he suffered from the Great Kanto Earthquake. This experience inspired him to become a painter; thus, he began to attend the Kawabata Art School. In 1926, he was selected to participate in the 7th Teiten exhibition. Based in Tokyo and Fukuoka, he came to be the advisor for a painting group in Fukuoka. In 1937, exempt from the selection process, he participated in the 1st Bunten exhibition. In that same year, Aoyagi and Kimpei Suzuki began to produce their original stencil print referred to as “Suranmiru Print.” He depicted many still-lifes and interior pictures that conveyed the ambiance of an Eastern taste, using motifs such as antique articles and folk toys. Aside from working as a painter, he also produced illustrations for newspaper serial novels and magazines, as well as book-cover designs. After his death, his friends posthumously published a book of his poems and drawings. |
