Biography | Italian sculptor/painter. Born in Pistoia. In 1917, entered Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and studied painting and drawing, but from around 1922, he began to create sculptures. In 1935, he received the Prize of the 2nd Quadriennale of Rome. He gained international recognition for receiving the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1952. He produced bronze sculptures of such forms as women, horses and riders, which allowed the viewer to perceive such influences as Greek and Etruscan classical art. In the latter half of the 1960s, he hurt his wrist producing stone sculptures. Thus, from 1974 onward, he focused on painting and printmaking. |
